Should You Filter Your Tap Water?

April 1, 2016 | Blog

According to a recent study, there are more than 300 pollutants that have been found in drinking water in the United States, from lead and copper to mercury and arsenic. You can buy bottled water, but there are few regulations governing bottled water, so you may have no idea what’s in your water. As a consequence, you may be considering filtering your tap water to minimize your risk of exposure to contaminants.

Before you take the plunge, though, it’s a good idea to have your water tested. That will tell you if you should filter and, if so, what type of filter you need. The best way to get your water tested is to call the Safe Water Hotline at the Environmental Protection Agency. There’s a toll free number you can call 1-(214) 753-4633 that will give you everything you need to test your water, and can help you determine what type of filter is best for you.

There are a number of filters, such as the Brita system, that are available in retail stores. These filters can be fine—just make certain that the filter you purchase is either NSF International or Water Quality Association certified or approved. If you do decide that you need to filter your water, it’s best to install the filter at the point where water enters your home. That will ensure that all water in your home is safe.

If your water test shows that your water is free of dangerous contaminants, but you still have an unpleasant odor or sediment in your water, a charcoal based filter, such as a Brita, will usually be sufficient. If, however, you have lead, mercury or other heavy metals in your water, or even pesticides, you need to contact an experienced plumber to determine the best solution to your problem.
