It’s time for spring cleaning, right? Why not incorporate a quick, do-it-yourself inspection of your home’s plumbing. It’s a better time of year to identify and remedy any potential problems. Here are the things want to look for:

• Inspect all your toilets for leaks—put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. You’ll see the color in the bowl within an hour if there’s any type of leak.
• Install a strainer in every drain, so that you don’t get a buildup of hair, soap or other items in your pipes
• Test every faucet in the house for leaks—slowly turn all faucets on and off, looking for any drips or leaks
• Check to make certain all toilets flush properly—if you have to jiggle the handle or hold it down, it should be replaced
• Pour a gallon of water into any drain you don’t use on a regular basis. These drains can trap gas and odors in the house. If you have a floor drain that backs up or drains slowly, consider having it snaked
• Look under sinks for any evidence of water damages or leaks
• Test your sump pump by pouring a few gallons of water down it
• Clean all debris, leaves and branches from rain gutters, downspouts and drains
• Check all outside fixtures, including faucets and hose bibs, to ensure they are working properly.
