Does this happen at your house? You turn on the shower or the bathroom sink, and the water is frigid, even though you opened the hot water spigot. A half a minute later, you’re still waiting for hot water. It’s not that uncommon, especially in an old house with an old plumbing system. However, there’s a way to combat that—with a hot water recirculation system.
What Is a Hot Water Recirculation System?
There are two types of hot water recirculation systems: traditional and instantaneous. The classic style uses a dedicated return line that runs from the furthest fixture back to the water heater. There’s a re-circulating pump that draws that water back into the water heater, essentially creating a loop. The loop keeps water continually moving through the house so that there’s always hot water at any tap.
The instant hot water recirculation system comes in a variety of models. The over-the-water-heater style has a pump above the water heater and a check valve under the fixture that’s farthest away. The pump creates pressure, which pushes hot water into the cold water system, thereby creating a loop. There’s also an “under-the-sink” version, which is installed at the fixture furthest from the water heater. With this type, you’ll need access to power under the sink to run the pump.
