The Importance of a Reliable Plumbing When Things Go Wrong
It always happens at the worst time—the toilet overflows or a pipe bursts. You need a plumber and you need one fast. But you don’t want to hire the first name in the book and you don’t want to just shop for the cheapest fix. Yes, it’s an emergency, but that doesn’t mean that somebody should take advantage of you. If necessary, turn of the water to your house or find a way to temporarily address the problem, so that you don’t make bad decisions out of haste.
The best solution — have a plumber that you know and trust, that you can call anytime, day or night. If you don’t have a regular plumber you can turn to, though, here are some tips to ensure you get the services you need without getting gouged in the process.
- Call more than one plumber — It’ll be hard, as you’ll want to set up an appointment with the first person you talk to. But it’s always in your best interests to have options.
- The price you get over the phone may not mean a whole lot — An honest plumber won’t be able to tell you how much it will cost until he or she sees what the problem is. If the plumber gives you a quote on the phone, chances are it’s just to get in the door and you’ll pay a lot more than that when the job is done.
- Make certain the company has a plumber available now or very soon. The nature of your problem may dictate whether you want to wait a day for service. If it’s a runny toilet and you can turn it off and use another one, no problem. If it’s something that needs to be done ASAP, keep calling until someone can come out soon.
- Check some online reviews — This can take less than 10 minutes, but can make a big difference. Beware, though—everybody can have one disgruntled customer—don’t disqualify a plumber because of a single bad review. If there are multiple thumbs down, though, look elsewhere.
