Dallas Hot Water Heater and Appliance Specialists
If you’re in the market for a new hot water heater, air conditioner, or household appliance, you’ll find a wide array of brands, models, and product lines. How can you tell what’s the best product to buy? While price, style, and convenience are important, more and more homeowners are opting for energy-efficient products that reduce greenhouse emissions. If environmentally friendly products are important to you, choosing a heater or appliance with an ENERGY STAR® rating can help you reduce the amount of energy your appliances and heater use.
What is the ENERGY STAR® Program?
The ENERGY STAR® program was created by John Hoffman at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the early 1990s as a way to reduce energy consumption and the emission of greenhouse gases by power plants. Initially, Energy Star was only one of a number of voluntary programs intended to demonstrate the profitability of certain energy efficient products. In its early years, the program identified energy efficient computer products with a voluntary labeling program that let consumers know if a product met certain efficiency requirements.
In 1995, the Energy Star program was expanded to include labels for residential heating and cooling systems. By 2006, the program had grown to include appliances, office equipment, home electronics, and other products. To date, there are more than 40,000 products available with an Energy Star rating. In fact, the Energy Star program is now international, having been adopted in Canada, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, and the European Union.
How Energy Efficient are Energy Star Program Products?
While each product is different, in general, Energy Star products use anywhere from 20% to 30% less energy than required by federal standards. In terms of water heaters, this translates into a savings of anywhere from 15% to 40% on utility bills annually. A household that uses Energy Star rated computers, washers, dryers, and dishwashers can save a substantial amount in energy costs over time.
