Your Guide to Getting the System That’s Right for You
The technology associated with tankless water heaters has come a long way in the last couple decades. Industry spokespersons expect a near 10% growth in the sales and installation of systems over the next five years. If you are considering installing a tankless system in new construction, or replacing your traditional water heater with a tankless system, here are some of the things you need to consider:
- Do you want gas or electric? Electric on demand water heaters cost less and are typically cheaper to install than gas-fired tankless systems. However, the gas systems are less expensive to operate.
- What is the Energy Factor (EF) rating on the unit? The energy factor measures the overall efficiency of the unit. The higher the EF rating, the more efficient the unit will be. Understand, however, that EF ratings don’t take into consideration the costs of fuel—natural gas vs. electricity
- Make certain you get the right size—There are two criteria for determining the appropriate size—the temperature rise and the flow rate. To identify the correct flow rate, you need to determine the maximum number of hot water sources that will be active at any given time and calculate the total number of gallons per minute that will be needed. Your temperature rise is calculated by subtracting the temperature of ground water from the desired temperature coming out of the tankless water heater.
- Check the warranty—Every hot water heater comes with some type of a warranty, but they are all different. Typical warranties include 10-15 years on the heat exchanger, two to five years on parts and one year on labor.
