Have you noticed the telltale signs of a leak in your shower? Have you discovered water spots or discoloration in the ceiling below an upstairs shower or water pooling on the floor in the bathroom? Though it can be obvious that the shower is leaking, it may be difficult to find the source of the leak. Here are some steps you can take to try to locate the problem.
Check the Shower Floor
You may have a crack in your shower floor, so small you can’t see it, but large enough for water to get through. There’s a simple way to test this. Clean and dry the shower floor and seal up the drain with a high-quality duct tape. Make certain the duct tape extends about half a foot on all sides of the drain. Then fill the shower floor with water from another source—either a hose or buckets of water. Now, wait…if the water level has not gone down in a half an hour, or if you don’t see evidence of a leak in the ceiling or rafters below the shower, your problem is likely elsewhere. However, if you do discover a leak, you want to call a professional plumber immediately.
Check the Drain
If the water level has not changed, remove the tape from the drain and let the water run through it. If you see a drop below the shower or notice water stains, you’ll probably have to have the drain and pipes replaced.
Check the Grout
More often than not, the source of a leak in a shower is in the grout in the tiled walls. If you have tiled walls in your shower, take a spray bottle of water (or a hose) and work on a wall at a time. Start at the bottom of the wall and spray enough water to allow you to regularly check for leaks. You may be able to locate the source of the leak through a visual inspection of the grout. If there’s grout missing, or if it’s cracked or chipped, that may be the source of your leak.
