If you have a sump pump in a basement or crawl space, you want to know that it will do its job when you need it. There are some simple steps you can take to make certain it stays in good order, so that you avoid a catastrophe in the event of heavy rains or a broken water pipe.

Run Your Sump Pump Periodically

If your basement stays pretty dry, you may have no idea if the sump pump is in working order. It’s generally a good idea to run some water in the pit every couple of months, just to make certain it kicks in.

Make Certain the Pump is Plumb

To function properly, your sump pump needs to be vertical. If it’s leaning to one side or the other, it can get jammed and malfunction.

Check All the Pipes

When you test your pump, also make sure than any pipe connections from the pump are tight. It’s also important that the water drain outside, preferably at least 20 feet from the pump. Otherwise, you may end up pumping the same water out over and over.

Clean the Pump Grate Periodically

If your pump is submersible (some part of it stays below the water level all the time), take it out of the pit at least once a year (more, if necessary) and ensure that the inlet is not blocked by rocks or other debris. You should also verify that the vent hole is not blocked, preventing water from flowing freely out from the pump.
