So you’re building a new home or making substantial renovations to your existing residence, including the installation of new plumbing systems. What are the key questions you need to ask a plumber to ensure that your interests will be fully protected?
Ask a Plumber About Their Experience
Start by finding out how long the company has been in business and how experienced its employees are. Everyone needs to start somewhere, but you want to make sure there will be someone on the job with knowledge and experience. Don’t assume because you’re working with a big-name plumbing contractor that the technicians on your job will have much experience. Ask.
Ask About Costs
You should get a full and detailed quote for all services to be rendered. Get quotes from at least three contractors. Be wary if the price of one is significantly lower than the others.
Is the Plumber Licensed
If your state requires plumbers to be licensed, ask to see a copy of the license. You may also check with the licensing bureau to see if the plumber has had any complaints filed.
Ask a Plumber About Their Insurance and Warranties
You need to know that the plumber has insurance to cover the possibility of personal injury or property damage. You’ll also want to know what warranties of quality the plumber offers. What services will the plumber provide if there are subsequent problems with the plumbing installation? Are parts under warranty and, if so, for how long?
The Plumber’s Reputation
It’s always a good idea to get some references from the plumber and call those references. Understand that the plumber will only refer you to people who were satisfied, but at least you’ll have real people who can tell you what to expect.
