Remodeling your kitchen or bathroom can be a very exciting endeavor, adding cutting edge functionality and enhancing the beauty of your living space. But it can also be a nightmare, if you don’t take the time to carefully plan for the anticipated changes. Here are some tips for ensuring that your bathroom or kitchen remodel goes as smoothly as possible, and that you don’t have any unforeseen consequences.
Step #1—Think about What Will Need to Be Moved
Will you be moving a sink or fixtures, or putting your refrigerator in a new location? Will you need to reroute water supply lines, including the line to your icemaker? Make certain your general contractor knows not only where everything will be located, but such things as the size and depth of your sink.
Step #2—Reroute and Stub the Plumbing before Cabinets and Fixtures are Installed
Make certain your plumber has the dimensions for sinks, shower heads and all other plumbing fixtures. Any supply or drain lines that need to be rerouted should be done before painting or installing cabinets. Your plumber should stub the plumbing, leaving a small section of pipe extruding from the wall or floor, so that tile and cabinets can be properly installed around it. If at all possible, install cabinets and dishwasher on top of flooring…it will be much easier to remove both in the future, if necessary.
Step #3—Make Certain There’s a Shutoff for Every Sink and Appliance
You want a shutoff valve for supply lines into every sink, as well as the shower, the toilet and all appliances, such as your dishwasher and refrigerator. That way, you won’t have to mop up a lot of water if you need any repairs in the future.
Step # 4—Replace Lead and Copper Pipes with PVC and Flex Pipes
If there’s a lot of rerouting or new plumbing to be installed, it’s a good time to replace iron or copper tubing with PVC and reinforced flex tubing. It will make plumbing maintenance easier, as well as any future repairs.
