It can often seem like plumbing problems only arise in the middle of the night or on weekends. Unfortunately, with most plumbing problems, you can’t wait until regular business hours for a repair. At the same time, you don’t want to expose yourself to unnecessary risk, just because you need to have something fixed. The short-term fix may cost you a lot more in the long run.

Here are some questions you need to ask, when contacting a plumber for an emergency repair:

  • What will the total cost be?—Make certain that you know all the charges before the project starts. Though the plumber may not know exactly what that will be until he or she sees the problem, confirm hourly rates and whether there’s an additional charge for off-hours service. The company should be able to give you a rough estimate, provided you accurately describe the problem.
  • Is the plumber licensed and insured?—Just because you need service quickly and outside of traditional business hours, you shouldn’t have to accept less-qualified technicians. Don’t work with an unlicensed plumber under any circumstances. Ask to see the plumber’s certificate of insurance. You don’t want to be responsible for any additional damage caused by the plumber.
  • Verify if there’s a warranty on products or services—Again, just because it’s an emergency doesn’t mean that you can’t expect that the problem will be effectively resolved. Ask the plumber to document all warranties in writing, so that you’ll have evidence if you need to rely on the warranty.
