When you’re putting in a water heater, one of the fundamental questions is how to heat the water—with gas or with electricity. But there’s another way, with a hybrid electric water heater.
What is a Hybrid Electric Water Heater?
A hybrid water heater uses more than one source to heat your water, but it’s not a combination of gas and electric. With a hybrid water heater, you generate heat from a heat pump, as well as from electricity. The heat pump pulls heat from the air around the water heater, operating pretty much like a refrigerator, only in the other direction. Using the same materials—coils, compressors and refrigerant—the heat pump pulls hot air in and releases cooler air into the same space. The heat pulled in from the surrounding air reduces the amount of electricity required to bring the tank up to temperature.
What Are the Benefits of a Hybrid Electric Water Heater?
The most tangible benefit from a hybrid hot water heater will be to your pocketbook. Estimates are that a typical hybrid hot water heater will cut your electric costs of heating water in half! The heaters are generally smaller and slimmer, so are easy to fit into closed quarters. The heat pump electric water heaters have the same connections as other water heaters, so they are pretty simple to install. In addition, most have touch pad controls, so that you can easily adjust your water temperature to satisfy your preferences.
