That’s because the water that’s in the pipes has no way to stay hot, so you have to wait until hot water from the water heater pushes out the existing water in the line before you can have hot water. It can save you a lot of water over the course of a year…some estimates are as much as 10,000 gallons a year in a four bedroom home with two bathrooms.

With a water circulation system, you attach a small pump to your hot water heater, which keeps a small amount of water moving through the pipes at all times. Instead of running one way, the water circulates through your pipes and back into the hot water heater. As a result the water in your pipes is always hot. There is the additional cost of running the circulation pump, but most are extremely efficient, using less energy than a 25 watt light bulb.
