There are few breakdowns more unpleasant than when your garbage disposal stops working. You may have food stuck in it and water backed up, causing a foul-smelling mess. A garbage disposal is typically not a complicated device—there are not that many things that can go wrong with it. If yours is not working, here are some potential causes of the breakdown.
- The unit is jammed—If the garbage disposal just hums when you turn it on, but does not dispose of food items, it’s probably jammed. Don’t put your hands or fingers in the disposal to try to unclog it!! If you are at all uncomfortable with trying to fix it, call us immediately and we’ll schedule a service call. You can, however, turn off the circuit breaker to the disposal and remove the housing on the bottom of the unit. That will give you access to the impellers so that you can remove the obstruction. Though it can be an easy fix, it can also be a dangerous one, so it’s best to hire a professional to fix it.
- The unit has overheated—If nothing happens when you turn the unit on, there’s a good chance you tripped the circuit breaker by overheating the unit. There should be a reset button on the disposal itself. Try that first. If that doesn’t give you power, go to your breaker box and see that breaker is tripped. If that still doesn’t bring power back, call us.
- The unit has lived a long and productive life, but needs to be put to rest—Garbage disposals are built to be pretty durable, but they tend to be one of the most heavily used products in your kitchen. Eventually, they’ll wear out. You don’t want to try to install one on your own unless you have substantial plumbing experience. Our professionals can get you back up and run in no time.
