Your Options for Getting Safe and Clean Water
If you’re on a well, or even if you have city water, you probably want to install some type of filter, particularly if you plan to cook with or drink water from your tap. You might consider bottled water as a solution, but there are a number of good reasons for not doing that:
- There are chemicals in the water bottles that can leech into the water you use
- There are no industry standards for bottled water, so the water you get from a bottle could be no better than what comes out or your tap, and could be worse
- Bottled water creates a significant amount of non-biodegradable waste
- Bottled water can get expensive in a hurry
There are a number of options available to you, from portable filtration systems to whole-house water filters. Here are some guidelines to help you decide which one is best for you.
- Pitcher water filtration systems—You can buy canisters and pitchers of various sizes that will filter your tap water. Most of them use granulated charcoal to remove contaminants. They’re relatively inexpensive to purchase, but you’ll need to change the filters on a periodic basis. In addition, they are not very effective at removing heavy metals and other toxins. They’re better than nothing, but don’t make a big difference.
- Charcoal sticks—This is another solution that doesn’t require any installation. These are sticks that can be dropped into a water bottle or pitcher and reused for months.
- Reverse osmosis filters—These filters use a membrane to separate contaminants from your drinking water. They can actually remove too many additives from your water, including naturally occurring minerals that are good for you. They also use more water than they produce.
