A broken water line or a leaking pipe—it can happen at any time, but it seems that these types of problems typically arise in the middle of the night or on the weekend. Even if you are able to get in touch with a plumber who can come out soon, there are certain steps you want to take to protect your safety and your property.

Turn Off the Water, if Possible

Typically, there will be a shutoff valve outside of your house, located by your water meters. In addition, you may have shutoff valves inside the house, allowing you to turn off water to different parts of the house. Often, when plumbers install such appliances as water heaters, or put in sinks or toilets, they will put a shut-off valve between the main water supply and the unit they have installed. It may be under a sink, or behind the toilet, or at the base of your water heater.

Turn Off Your Water Heater

If you are not getting water into the water heater, it is critical that you turn the water heater off as soon as possible. The unit can overheat and cause a fire if there is no water in the tank. There may be an on-off switch on the unit, but you are better off to go to your power box and turn off the circuit breakers. If you have a gas-powered water heater, you also want to turn off the gas. To do this, locate the copper pipe bringing the gas into the unit. There should be a shut-off valve between the water heater and the gas supply.
