Dallas Area Water Filtration Systems

Water filter systemDoes your water have a “twang” to it? Maybe it tastes a bit like chlorine or smells funny occasionally. You’re not alone. Increasingly, Americans are buying water filtration systems to ensure they get better tasting, cleaner water free of microbes and certain kinds of toxins and heavy metals. And, as information regarding potential dangers associated with fluoride continues to appear, some homeowners want filtration systems that allow them to remove fluoride from drinking water as well.

So, what kind of water filtration systems are out there and what works best for you?

Kinds of Water Filtration Systems

There are a number of methods for filtering water. Some water filtration systems use one kind of technology while others use a combination of methods. If you have specific concerns regarding certain kinds of contaminants – for example, mercury, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), minerals, viruses, bacteria, chlorine, or fluoride – make sure your filter is certified for that particular kind of contaminant.

If your goal is to remove odors, discoloration, or an unusual taste, the following kinds of water filtration methods are available for you to consider:

  • Ceramic
  • Carbon Block
  • Activated Carbon
  • Deionization
  • Reverse Osmosis
  • Ion Exchange
  • Mechanical Filters
  • Distillation
  • Ultraviolet
  • Water Softeners

Which Filter Should I Buy?

There is no simple way to answer this question as which water filtration system that will work best for you will depend on what you hope to achieve with your water filtration system. Some homeowners are content with removing odors or a strange taste and are happy to install a filter on their kitchen sink for the purposes of drinking water. Here, an activated carbon, carbon block, or ceramic filter may do the job. Depending on the kind of carbon filter in question, they can also be used to remove VOCs.

If you’re concerned about microbes like e coli, cryptosporidium, giardia lamblia or other microorganisms, an ultraviolet filter may be the most effective filter for ensuring the safety of your water.

If you want to remove chemical contaminants like fluoride, hexavalent chromium, nitrates, arsenic, or perchlorate, a reverse osmosis filter may be your best option – though reverse osmosis filters do not remover chlorine and VOCs.

If you have a well and want to remove radionuclides and the radiation certain minerals emit in the form of alpha, photon, and beta waves, you’ll want to check with the EPA to determine what is the most safe and effective means for ensuring the safety of your well water.
