Dallas / Ft. Worth Plumbers / Hot Water Heaters
Commercial hot water storage tanks are used in apartment buildings, offices, and hotels – places where there is high demand for hot water. Typically, commercial hot water tanks hold between 180 gallons to 5,000 gallons of water. Depending on the manufacturer, a commercial hot water storage tank is typically made of metal and cement- or glass-lined to prevent heat loss. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from large, vertical tanks to horizontal pool-shaped tanks. In many cases, they are custom-built to fit the needs of the customer.
How Commercial Hot Water Storage Tanks Work
Typically, the internal heating mechanisms of a tank vary, depending on the volume and temperature of hot water needed. The heating element in most tanks is made out of sealed looped copper tubing that has heating elements running through it. These are referred to as “bundles.” Depending on the flow rate and temperature requirements of a building, a commercial hot water storage tank will have more or fewer bundles. Typically, heating coils are installed during the manufacturing process and generate an increase in water temperature anywhere between 30 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit.
Commercial Hot Water Storage Tanks – Providing Hot Water
Commercial hot water storage tanks gather cold or warm water when either is pumped into the tank through the in-flow pipe. The rate of in-flow will depend on the demand for hot water at any given time. After water reaches the desired temperature, it flows out to be circulated for use. A pressure-sensitive valve allows more cool water to flow into the tank to be heated, ensuring hot water is available on an as-needed basis. In some commercial hot water storage tank systems, hot water is recycled and used for other purposes such as radiant floor heaters.
