In the freezing weather we have some tips that we want to share with you to keep you from having an expensive winter.
1. If you have a pier and beam home, close the vent covers that are on the outside of your home- if you don’t have any vent covers just use cardboard to cover the vents to keep the cool air from coming in.
2. Open any cabinet doors where there is plumbing on an outside wall. Example: open the cabinets under the kitchen sink if it is on an outside wall so the heat from the house can keep the pipes nice and toasty so they don’t freeze.
3. Any outside hydrants would benefit from wrapping a towel around them and covering them with a bucket to keep the cold from causing them to freeze and break (hydrants are when the pipe sticks up from the ground).
If you have a wall hydrant you can purchase covers from Home Depot, put a towel on the hydrant and then cover.
4. If you find you have no water coming out of your fixtures then your pipes are frozen. We can not do anything about frozen pipes – we can help when the pipes thaw and cause freeze breaks.
If you take care of these things before the freeze comes you will be able to enjoy a cozy time in front of the fireplace during this type of weather.
