Telltale Signs of Trouble
If you’re using natural gas to heat your home and your water, you want to take appropriate steps to ensure that you’re not experiencing any gas leaks. While the gas companies add chemicals to give the gas a distinct odor, it’s possible to find yourself in a dangerous situation before you smell anything. It’s not just the risk of a fire or explosion. A slow natural gas leak can put you at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Signs that You May Have a Natural Gas Leak
There are a number of ways that you can detect a natural gas leak. Of course, if you continually smell gas in one area of the house, that’s a clear sign—it’ll be easy to detect, as it smells like rotten eggs. Another frequent indication is an unexpected increase in your gas bill. If you are properly tending to house plants and they are dying, that can also be a telltale sign of a gas leak.
There are, however, other physical symptoms that may point to a gas leak:
- Frequent headaches or nausea
- Dizziness, drowsiness or light-headedness
- Chest pains or difficulty breathing
- Nose bleeds
- Depression or loss of appetite
- A ringing in your ears
The best way to protect yourself from a potential gas leak is to be proactive. An annual inspection of all gas appliances and gas lines is a good idea. Put a carbon monoxide detector on every floor in your house, and in every bedroom. Don’t block cold air intakes or other vents in your home.
Most gas companies will inspect for gas leaks without any charge to you. If you suspect a gas leak, contact your natural gas provider.
