Dallas Clogged Drain Plumbers
If you’re like most people, it’s hard to keep food, coffee grounds, and grease out of the kitchen sink. As most homeowners eventually discover, however, overtime this leads to a clogged kitchen drain. Since a clogged drain can be aggravated by the shape of your pipes, as well as hair and other debris, using store-bought drain clog removers doesn’t always work. Like many other problems in life, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
What Causes Clogged Kitchen Sinks
In the vast majority of cases, clogged kitchen sinks are causes by a buildup of grease. Grease buildup traps food and other material that finds its way into your drain. This can be further complicated by soap buildup. Consequently, one of the most effective preventative measures you can take to avoid a clogged kitchen sink is simply not pouring grease down the drain.
If you have an old coffee can on hand, try pouring as much grease into it as possible to avoid pouring grease down the kitchen sink. And here, coffee drinkers should take note: throw coffee grounds in the trash – DO NOT empty them into the kitchen sink. The combination of grease and coffee grounds will almost certainly cause buildup and clogs.
Preventing Food from going down the Drain
Using a strainer is a good idea – but only if you clean it regularly. Strainers catch food – especially things like rice, noodles, corn, and seeds. However, if you don’t clean the strainer, over time water will begin to back up since it can’t flow easily through the strainer. This in turn dislodges food particles and takes them down the drain. Additionally, if you can, empty plates into the garbage in order to remove as much food from them before washing them in the sink.
Cleaners – A good Idea?
There are cleaners one can buy that are supposed to dissolve accumulated buildup in an effort to prevent clogs. The problem here, however, is whether or not a cleaner in question is safe for your pipes. In general, agents that dissolve buildup can be caustic, harming pipes with repeated use. Cleaning agents made from sodium hydroxide or sodium nitrate are typically safe but may not be as effective as other cleaning agents available.
Again, in general, if you follow the preventative steps outlined above, you can greatly reduce your chances of a clogged kitchen sink and the need to use chemical cleaning agents.
